Ability Guide
Choosing the right heli-skiing or snowboarding package isn’t just about how many runs you want to take on. It’s important to remember that skill levels can vary not just between people but also among different countries and resorts. Plus, your fitness can change from year to year, so think about how much skiing or snowboarding you’ve done this season. If you’re feeling a bit out of shape, worried about falling a lot, or if you have plenty of experience but haven’t hit the slopes recently, it might be a good idea to go for a package that’s a level lower or take a ski school lesson. That way, you can have a safer and more enjoyable time on the mountain!
- Intermediate: If you’re at this level, you’re ski fit and feeling good on blue groomed runs, and you’re also ready to give black runs a try. You might not have a ton of experience in powder or off-piste skiing yet, but you’re eager to push yourself and improve your skills in all kinds of conditions.
- Advanced/Advanced+: As an advanced skier or snowboarder, you’ve got the fitness and experience to take on the slopes like a pro. You’re technically strong and regularly tackle black runs and love hunting for deep snow. You feel confident navigating tougher terrain and enjoy pushing your limits while soaking up the excitement of the sport.
- Expert: At the expert level, you’re not just ski fit—you’re skilled enough to handle long, off-piste runs without needing to catch your breath. You hardly ever fall and have plenty of experience in powder, so you can take on the toughest runs with ease. Your expertise puts you among the best in the skiing and snowboarding community!
A Typical Day
The Day Before
Your adventure at Whistler Heli-Skiing kicks off with a quick check-in at the Carleton Lodge. To make sure everything goes smoothly, try to arrive at least 24 hours before your ski day—ideally right when you get to Whistler! If you haven’t checked in by 4:00 PM the day before your ski day, you might lose your spot.
During check-in, staff will confirm that your digital waiver has been signed and help with heli-specific rental skis or board rentals. For the best powder performance, they recommend having the right ski equipment (skis with at least 108 mm underfoot).
On the afternoon before your heli ski day, swing by the Powder Hut between 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM to set up your rental gear—just remember to bring your ski or snowboard boots!

The Day Of Your Trip
On the morning of your trip, Whistler Heli-Skiing will ensure that the weather and snow conditions are decent enough to fly. Check your status link at 6:40 AM that day. If you see a Green Light, it’s go time! If the inclement weather cancels your heli-ski day, you’ll see a Red Light on your status link. Whistler Heli-Skiing will call you to reschedule.
You’ll check in at the Whistler Heli-Skiing Office in the Carleton Lodge at 8:15 AM if you need rental gear, or at 8:30 AM if you’re all set. After that, it’s just a short 5-minute walk to the Powder Hut where you’ll meet your guide, change into your boots, and leave behind any personal stuff. They will provide a small backpack for your water bottle and an extra layer.
Next up is the heliport for a briefing on the helicopter and transceiver, which takes about 45 minutes to an hour.
Once the safety briefings wrap up, you’ll be off into the stunning mountains, ready for an adventure! Each ski run usually takes about 20 to 45 minutes, and your guide will pick the best spots based on what’s happening with the conditions—things like avalanche risk, snow quality, and even the wind. You’ll get to explore some amazing terrain, from wide-open glaciers to rolling bowls and beautiful ridges at tree line. Plus, you’ll probably get most of your runs in before lunch!
After working up a hearty appetite, you’ll be treated to a delicious meal of sandwiches, soup, tea, and sweet treats, courtesy of the renowned Bearfoot Bistro, all served amidst the stunning mountain scenery.
Once everyone is satisfied, the adventure continues with more opportunities for exhilarating runs, time permitting and legs willing. Most days, you’ll find yourselves back in Whistler Village by 4 PM, but on occasion, they like to extend the excitement during the spring when the daylight is abundant.
Après Ski
To cap off an epic day, you’re invited to celebrate with your group at the legendary GLC at the bottom of the mountain. For those wanting to elevate their experience, consider pre-booking an exclusive patio table with outdoor heating for a truly memorable end to the day.
